The euphonium conduit between the two top ranked Welsh heavyweights has been completed with the news that Daniel Thomas of British Open champion Tredegar has joined the European & National title holders Cory.
Short notice
Musical Director Philip Harper told 4BR: "As previously reported, after the departure of Matthew White and with concerts to cover, it made sense to promote Martyn Patterson to the end-chair whilst ex-Cory player Matthew Jenkins agreed to come in at short notice to assist him."
Too good to miss
He added: "After finding out that Daniel was available before he starts his studies at the RNCM in September, it was also an opportunity too good to miss.
We had a chat and I’m delighted that he will provide us with a perfect short-term solution, playing number two to Martyn, starting at the Welsh Regional Championships.
Daniel has already had a stint with Cory a few years ago, and both his parents play with the band. I'm very happy we're able to offer him a musical home before he takes up his studies.
With such a strong short-term solution now in place, it gives me the time I need to assess all my long-term options in filling one of the most important seats in the band."
It’s such a great opportunity to join Cory and be able to keep playing at the very highest level until I start my studiesDaniel Thomas
Ideal
Daniel told 4BR that he was also delighted to join the European champions. "It’s an ideal solution for everyone," he said. "It’s such a great opportunity to join Cory and be able to keep playing at the very highest level until I start my studies.
I’ve enjoyed a great time with Tredegar and can carry on my individual practice at their rehearsal room — so it’s a decision that certainly benefits me until I go to Manchester."
