All that jazz for Welsh youth

The National Youth Brass Band of Wales has commissioned a major new work form renowned jazz composer Huw Warren

The National Youth Brass Band of Wales has commissioned jazz pianist and composer, Huw Warren to write a concerto to be premiered on its 2014 summer tour.

Solo trumpets

The 10 minute work for two solo trumpets, rhythm section and band will be performed by leading jazz trumpeters, Percy Pursglove and Gethin Liddington and directed by course conductor, Reid Gilje.

The concerts take place at Canolfan Beaumaris on Friday 25th July and Wrexham’s William Aston Hall on Saturday 26th July.

International reputation

Huw Warren has achieved an international reputation for innovative and eclectic music making over a twenty year career, with compositions that move between quirky rhythmic grooves and profound melodic beauty — although even at his most experimental his music is always fun and approachable.

His understated approach to song accompaniment has led him to perform and record with some of the world’s greatest singers.

Creative partnerships

Awarded the BBC Jazz award for Innovation, and the ACW Creative Wales Award, Huw has also written for many ensembles including Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Welsh Chamber Orchestra, RSC, LPO Renga ensemble, The Orlando Consort, Ensmble Plus, Koch Ensemble and Tango Siempre.

Recently he has worked with choreographer Chloe Loftus, visual artist Catrin Williams and photographer David Woodfall.
