Euphonium star David Childs has just completed a ground breaking solo CD recording with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.
The Chandos release will feature four iconic Concerto works for the euphonium — from the 1972 Joseph Horovitz composition through to those of Philip Wilby (1995), Alan Hoddinott (2002) and Karl Jenkins (2009).
Delighted
David told 4BR that not only was he delighted to finally be able to record these major works with a world renowned symphony orchestra, but to do so directed by Bramwell Tovey.
"In 2012 I received a very kind email from the MD of Chandos Records, Ralph Couzens, who was interested in pursuing the concept of recording major repertoire for Euphonium & Orchestra.
For many years I'd tried with no luck to encourage classical labels, but this changed everything — and all with the added bonus of it being conducted by Bramwell Tovey.
I have also been very fortunate to work with the NOW several times so I was delighted when they agreed to be part of this project."
Sparkling form
The recording took place on a weekend in early January at the Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff’s Millennium Opera House, and as Bramwell Tovey told 4BR, the euphonium virtuoso was on sparkling form.
"For three days solid he performed in the studio at a world class level, impressing everyone present with his innate musicality, his brilliant technique and his endearing and genuine humility," he said.
Extraordinary
"He really is an extraordinary player. At no stage did he ever seem to tire or grow weary. He was master of his brief.
It was a joy to work with him and BBC NOW on this unique project for Chandos."

Impressed soloist
David was equally impressed by his fellow musicians too: "The orchestra was superb, and playing for Bramwell Tovey was an experience I will never forget.
Over the years I've watched and listened to him work his magic with the NYBBGB, Foden’s, and the New York Philharmonic, but playing for him really was something special.
His is a true Maestro. The whole experience was quite literally a dream come true!"
The recording is due for release in October.
