The members of the Lanner & District Band made their annual trip to take part in the annual South West Brass Band Association Contest held at the Riveria Centre in Torquay, and returned home delighted with their third place finish in the highly competitive Open Section.
Terra Australis
In a contest for bands graded in the Championship and First Section, and delivered a fine performance of Martin Ellerby’s, ‘Terra Australis’ to push top flight rivals Aldbourne and Camborne all the way to the finishing line and also retain their stranglehold on the prize for the highest placed First Section band.
Wonderful
Musical Director, Stuart Chappell told 4BR: "This is probably the most demanding music this band has played having been used for the National Finals only a couple of years ago. It's wonderful music and the whole band responded to its demands magnificently.
As we played the last note I felt that we had given a performance that had something special about it and we are so delighted that the adjudicators Jim Davis and Derek Renshaw agreed."

Four years in a row
Band Chairman, Lee Rouse, added: "We have now won the First Section award for four years in a row, but from 2014 we will be competing as a Championship Section band.
I don't recall the Open section at this contest ever having as many as 12 entries before so we came away very happy indeed. Our congratulations go to the Aldbourne for winning the SWBBA title and Camborne Town Band for coming second."
