A little piece of banding history was made at a New York Staff Band rehearsal recently when Vernon Post, Bandmaster from 1963-1972, returned to direct the players through his new transcription of the first movement of the famous Hummel ‘Trumpet Concerto’.
Recording
The transcription has been made by Vernon for the upcoming Clarence Addoo recording ‘Melodies from the Great Composers’, where the completed work will be performed by Cory soprano star Steve Stewart, accompanied by the Co-operative Funeralcare Band.
The second and third movements of the work were originally transcribed at the request of renowned trumpet player, Derek Smith, for the band’s UK tour back in 1968.
It does feel like a piece of history has been completed with the whole band version of the concerto being finished 45 years on, and the first time it is played is by the same band and conductorJohn Ward
Thanks
Organiser and conductor of the fundraising project, John Ward told 4BR: "I want to express my thanks to Vernon, Bandmaster Ron Waiksnoris, the NYSB and soloist Derek Lance for reading through this new transcription.
It does feel like a piece of history has been completed with the whole band version of the concerto being finished 45 years on, and the first time it is played is by the same band and conductor!"
The recording will take place at Glasgow’s Henry Wood Hall in October.
