In a ground breaking first for New Zealand banding, North Shore Brass has collaborated with the New Zealand Dance Company (NZDC) to present a new artistic collaboration entitled ‘Rotunda’.
Inspired
It has been inspired by the history of the city of Invercargill with Rotunda’s MD Don McGlashan rescoring iconic banding standards, alongside contemporary brass music from his own repertoire and that of fellow New Zealand composers Gareth Farr and John Ritchie.
Traditional hymns are woven into a stunning score to conjure the emotional landscape of a seminal time in New Zealand’s history following the outbreak of the First World War.

Creative process
"This isn’t just a gig where we turn up and play," North Shore’s Musical Director, Colin Clark told 4BR:
"The band has been a part of the creative process since 2012, proving we are capable of a much wider range of music than just marches and Christmas carols."
Benefit
Colin added: "Working side-by-side with the NZDC has given the band a really exciting taste of the diverse and vibrant arts community with New Zealand – and one that will benefit us greatly as a band."
