Mealor set to support organ transplant

The rescue and restoration of one of the great 19th century organs of London will be celebrated in some style next month.

Henrry Willis organ

One of London's most famous chapels is launching its ‘Organ Project’ in July to help celebrate the half a million pound restoration of its renowned 19th century Henry Willis organ.

Support

The project has attracted the support of many leading musicians, including Royal Wedding composer and former Northop euphonium player Paul Mealor.

Starting on July 14th the week of high profile performances from different musical genres will also feature the London premier of Carl Dreyer's music to the iconic 1928 silent film ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’, Norwegian film-score composer Rebekka Karijord, Icelandic record label/collective Bedroom Community and St Paul Cathedral organist Simon Johnson.

All proceeds are going to the Union Chapel’s Organ Education Outreach Fund, encouraging creativity and imagination in young people.

Unaltered

Built in 1877, the Henry Willis Organ at Union Chapel is the only existing organ of its kind in the UK and remains virtually unaltered, either mechanically or tonally since its construction.

With help from the Heritage Lottery Fund and other donations, Union Chapel has restored the historic instrument to its former glory, securing its future for generations to come.

Wonderful music

Paul exclusively told 4BR: "There is going to be so much wonderful music to be heard played on a truly magnificent musical instrument – one that can encompass so many different genres too.

The line up of talent is amazing – from Simon Johnson and Rebekka Karijord to the Icelandic collective Bedroom Community and Swedish fantasy pop cellist Linnea Olsson.

The music to the screening of the silent film ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’ is wonderful, whilst I’m delighted to have written a new work for Aberdeen-based organist Dr Roger Williams for his recital concert on July 18th."

Pleasure

Paul added: "It’s an absolute pleasure to be a part of Union Chapel's launch of the newly restored Henry Willis Organ.

The Organ Project will provide an innovative performance strand as well as an exciting new education outreach programme based around the organ and it’s fantastic to be involved in the launch of this."

Tickets

Tickets for the Organ Project launch are available from www.unionchapel.org.uk or from Stargreen on 0207 734 8932 with the opening recital by Simon Johnson absolutely free
