Regent Brass MD Alan Duguid has told 4BR that the London & Southern Counties Area champion is looking forward to highlighting the diversity of their local Brent community through the forthcoming world premiere of Raymond Yiu’s innovative composition, ‘Ink Garden’.
Performance
The performance at the Brent Civic Centre in Wembley on Thursday 27th June at 7.00pm, will see Regent Brass join forces with Regent Community Brass to showcase a work inspired by 17th century Chinese calligraphy, but featuring musical elements as diverse as jazz, waltz, humoresques and even a touch of Icelandic folk!
Wonderful
"It’s a wonderful composition that I hope will bring the whole community together," Alan told 4BR.
"It’s a complex, inventive and highly enjoyable work to perform and to listen to, with elements you may not readily associate with Brent. However, the more you get into the music the more the diverse nature of what it portrays becomes so transparent."
Richard Rodney Bennett
‘Ink Garden’ is inspired by an early 17th century collection of Chinese calligraphy and graphics, and is a tribute to the composer Richard Rodney Bennett who died last year.
It draws much of its musicality from one of Bennett’s unpublished jazz songs ‘Goodbye for Now’ but also other more obscure reference points.
Regent Brass is proud of the part it plays within its local community – and we hope this is reflected in the music that will be performed on the nightMD, Alan Duguid
Beauty
"That’s it beauty," Alan added. "Raymond is such a wonderful composer that he is able to mix the genres of different music so cleverly — and with a lovely touch of wit to close.
Both bands play their part with some elements more suited to the community band players and others to the senior band. Together though it paints a wonderful picture that is so resonant of the diverse community found in Brent."
Funding
Funding for the ground breaking work has come from the BBC Performing Arts Fund and PRS for Music Foundation, and Alan believes it could be the blueprint for many other bands to follow.
"Regent Brass is proud of the part it plays within its local community – and we hope this is reflected in the music that will be performed on the night.
We are all looking forward to the concert and we hope it will provide inspiration for many ore community based bands like ourselves throughout the country."
