There is some welcome good news for Grimethorpe Colliery Band following the announcement that the vastly experienced William Rushworth has been appointed solo horn with immediate effect.
Unexpected offer
William, who joins from Desford, told 4BR, the unexpected offer left him delighted but surprised: "It was my full intention to retire after the Nationals with Desford and I made my intentions known to Peter Smith and the band.
However, I had not expected the phone call which I received on the train home from Grimethorpe Band Manager Nigel Dixon."
Honour
He continued: "He offered me the position of solo horn with the band and I couldn’t believe the position this left me in.
What an honour — and to refuse this invitation, even at this late stage in my career would have been foolish, and one I’m sure I would have regretted — so I had no hesitation in accepting."
Looking forward
He added: "I’m looking forward to the future with great anticipation and can’t wait to get to grips with Harmony Music at the area. However, I just have the not too insignificant task of helping Desford at Butlins before calling it a day with that great band."

Best players
Grimethorpe spokesperson Gareth Crane told 4BR: "When you are in demand concert wise as much as Grimethorpe you have to have the best players to maintain the high standards our fans and audiences have come to expect.
Along with the signing of Kevin Crockford on soprano, we feel that to get two players of this calibre and experience shows that we will always strive to maintain our hard earned reputation for musical quality and excellence."
