Derwent Brass has been shortlisted in the 2013 Epic Awards thanks to their pioneering work with composer Paul McGhee.
Anniversary work
The band worked in close partnership with EBBA European Composer’s Award winner to help celebrate their 20th anniversary last year, especially in performances of his specially commissioned work; 'Episodes, Occurrences and Interludes' (subtitled ‘a journal of memories, mishaps, adventures and escapades’).
In addition the nomination also regonises the band’s charitable work as well as their commitment to supporting local musicians through brass and performance workshop initiatives.
Proud
The Epic Awards rewards the very best in amateur art and craft activity across the UK and Republic of Ireland, and as Marketing Manager Chris Leonard told 4BR, the band are proud to have been nominated.
"2012 was a great celebratory year for Derwent Brass," he said.
"Despite all the great events we were involved in, the highlight was the new commission project from Paul. Bringing brass bands to the fore especially where new and contemporary music is involved is important for the whole of the banding movement’s continued improvement and momentum."

Opportunities
He added: "Not only was the music fantastic, but the opportunities it bought to the band were very well received indeed. It is so encouraging it has now received national recognition within the amateur arts sphere, with the Epic Award short listing."
Vote early!
Chris also pointed out that alongside a possible ‘Epic’ outcome the band could also be in line for a People’s Choice Award.
