Death of Simon Applegate

The death has been announced of Guernsey Concert Brass MD, Simon Applegate.

The death has been announced of Simon Applegate, the Musical Director of the Guernsey Concert Band (more recently renamed as Guernsey Concert Brass). He passed away on Wednesday evening after an illness courageously borne.

Highly respected

A highly respected military musician, Simon attended Kneller Hall and came to Guernsey as MD of the 9th/12th Lancers. He loved the island so much that he moved over to live and took charge of the local brass band.

A spokesperson told 4BR: "Through Simon's enthusiasm and skill the band achieved a high level of performance for such a small organisation. Under his guidance the band have taken part in some area contests and on four occasions we travelled to and taken part in the Whit Friday march contests."

Sorely missed

They added: "Simon was one of the first people to gain a degree in brass band adjudication. His character, drive, enthusiasm and knowledge will be sorely missed."

Funeral arrangements

The funeral has been arranged for Thursday 20th December. It is hoped that in the New Year the band will arrange a celebratory memorial concert.
