The National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain has been a vital training ground for some of our best brass players and this is its 60th Anniversary year.
Bramwell Tovey has been their Music Advisor since 2006 and he talks to Frank Renton about the spirit and the success of the band and conducts them in concert at The Brass In Concert Gala 2012 recorded at The Sage Gatehead.
21st November:
Frank Renton and Simone Rebello present Radio 2 Young Brass Awards to the 2013 recipients as part of The Brass in Concert Gala at the Sage, Gateshead.
The 3 categories are Best Soloist Under 18, Best Soloist Under 21 and Best Youth Band who will all be invited to play for the Overall Award in a special concert at The Royal Northern College of Music's Festival of Brass.
7th November:
Trumpeter, Fellow and Senior Lecturer at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Paul Cosh retired from the BBC Symphony Orchestra in September 2005, almost 50 years to the day that he was given a cornet in a tin hut in Sherborne.
His dad Colin painted the 5 lines of the musical stave on a black board and wrote tunes on it for Paul to learn, starting with a popular film theme of the day The Dambusters.
Colin then went on to found The Sherborne Town Band in 1961 which Paul now conducts in a new a celebratory CD called Jubilee. He tells Frank Renton about the bands early days, the family connections which run deep in banding and the challenges of keeping a town band together today.
31st October:
Frank Renton plays some classic brass band recordings and new releases.
He features 'It's better with a Band" a new CD which teams a brass band with at various times a singer, a pianist, a trumpet and a solo trombone.
