4BR has been informed of the death of the popular and respected Walter Ritchie BEM, who passed away following a two year illness on the 11th October surrounded by his family.
First interest
Walter first became interested in music during his time at Shawland Academy in Glasgow, where he played trumpet. He later joined the Govan Borough Band.
His National Service came with the RAF, where he later became a regular player with its Voluntary Bands until 1979. He was awarded the BEM in the 1978 Honours List.
Conducting
His conducting started whilst still serving with the RAF with Newark Town in Nottinghamshire. During his stay he led them to a number of successful National Final appearances before returning to play with the Ransome & Marles Band where he was later appointed resident conductor.
As MD of the Foss Dyke Band for 21 years he led them from Fourth to Championship Section, staying at the helm until 2005. In 2006 he became MD of Carlton Brass, a position he held for over four years until retirement in 2010.

Chairman
Walter had served as National Chairman of the NABBC and President of No. 3 Area. He was a highly respected member of the Executive Council for a number of years.
Funeral details
Walter’s eldest son Alan died tragically four years ago and both are survived by Walter’s wife Marie and their children Graham and Julie.
The funeral will take place at St Michael’s Church, High Street, Waddington, Lincoln on Friday 26th October at 1.00pm.
