The Gillingham Imperial Silver Band in North Dorset will be opening its doors this weekend to anyone in their local community who wishes to learn more about, and hopefully join, their band.
Proactive
The proactive approach on Saturday 8th September is free of charge and will provide an interactive guide to try and recruit new members to its successful set up.
Band members will be on hand to answer questions and give out information, as well as demonstrate the full array of instruments that may catch the eyes and ears of potential recruits who can start the learning process through the band’s training set up.
Boghorn
Both brass players and budding percussionists will be able to have a go of the instruments whilst mums and dads can also become a part of the band through their GISB’s Supporter’s Club.
There will even be the chance to play on a Boghorn, and maybe even get on television when local musician Nick Crump will drop in with some of his unusual instruments. Nick is currently being filmed by ITV, whilst the main Gillingham Band will take a turn to play a few numbers too.
No one is too young or too old to take up an instrument and we have a fantastic training band and spare instruments to start anyone offMD, Paul Williams
Fantastic
Musical Director Paul Williams told 4BR: "No one is too young or too old to take up an instrument and we have a fantastic training band and spare instruments to start anyone off – as well as wlcome back players who wish to take up brass banding again."
There will even be an Olympic Torch on display, carried recently by one of its players.
