The ongoing dispute between the British Federation of Brass Bands and staff at the British Brass Band Registry entered a new phase in its development this morning.
Former Registry Line Manager Frank Hodges has publically urged both parties to enter into mediation to try and resolve what is becoming an increasingly damaging situation for banding in the UK.
Director role
In his role as a Director of BFBB Contest Limited, under which it is understood the Registry rights are assigned as a separate legal entity, he has urged the BFBB to enter into the process with Registry staff to try to ensure the dispute does not escalate further.
4BR understands that at present the Registry is unable to process registration and transfer enquiries, with bands throughout the UK becoming increasingly anxious that it will affect their ability to meet registration rules for forthcoming contests.
I am sure everyone concerned wishes for this dispute to be resolved as soon as possible – but it must be done through proper mediationBFBB Contest Ltd Director, Frank Hodges
Alternative arrangements
The National Championships of Great Britain have already stated that if the dispute is not resolved in the near future then they will make alternative arrangements to ensure that the correct registration processes are followed for the London and Cheltenham Finals, whilst it is understood that the British Open is considering the same course of action too.
Reverse decision
Frank Hodges stated: “I fully agree with and endorse the view and position of the staff of the British Brass Band Registry.
I also join them in inviting the BFBB to consider reversing their decision in relieving me of my position as Line Manager of the Registry to enable both parties to return to a situation where the Registry can once again function as normal.
To do this I would urge the BFBB to join with Registry staff into entering into dialogue facilitated by mediation. I understand that there are several organisations willing to do this. This process will enable the Registry to function properly as we work towards resolving outstanding issues in a reasonable manner.
I have on several previous occasions requested to meet with the Trustees to discuss the problems in a structured manner, but at a BFBB meeting on 14th January 2012, the BFBB decided that nothing should be done until the employment grievances of Registry Manager Mr Colin Johnson were resolved.
Mr. Johnson’s grievances are still ongoing, and this remained the position until taking the action that has caused so much damage and inconvenience to us all.”
Only course of action
Frank Hodges is fully aware of the damage the situation has the potential to cause for the banding movement in the UK.
"I am sure everyone concerned wishes for this dispute to be resolved as soon as possible – but it must be done through proper mediation.
This is now the only course of action that seems available to both parties. The hard working, highly professional staff at the Registry certainly wish the matter to be resolved as soon as possible.
In the meantime I would urge bands to contact contest organisers to tell them of any potential registration problems they may envisage."
