Yorkshire Imps deny Marsden double hat trick at Morley.

There was a fantastic turn out of bands at the Morley March & Hymn Tune contest on the weekend, when 17 competitors battled it out for their share of the generous £1,600 prize pot that was on offer.

Exciting fight

In what proved to be an exciting fight for the £500 first prize, it was Yorkshire Imperial David Urquhart Travel that claimed the honours under the command of Dave Nesbitt.

The band also claimed an extra £170 in prizes for winning both elements of the contest and the road march to bring their total winnings to £670, with their soprano player also taking the ‘Best Instrumentalist’ Award.

High quality

It proved just enough to beat off the challenge of double hat trick seeking Marsden Silver directed by Paul Andrews, with East Yorkshire Motor Services in third.

There was plenty of high quality playing to enjoy for music adjudicators Stan Lippeatt and Stuart Fawcett, road march judge Ted Griffith and deportment adjudicator John Huck, as well as the large and appreciative audience.

Contest Controller Geoff Fowler told 4BR: "It was an excellent contest day – with a great line up of competitors and plenty of brilliant music."
