Black Dyke take the Saddleworth & Oldham Whit Friday Championships.

Black Dyke has been crowned the 2012 Saddleworth & Oldham District Whit Friday Champion.

Grand Knight

Conducted by Dr Nicholas Childs, the reigning English, European and Yorkshire title holder, performed 'Knight Templar' to claim victories at Delph, Denshaw, Diggle, Greenacres, Lydgate and Lees & Springhead, along with a third place at Dobcross to pocket prize money of £4,850.

And with the Saddleworth overall prize of £2,500 and an additional £280 obtained from various individual solo and sectional awards, Dyke ended the night with a whopping £7,630 to put in their local Queensbury bank.

MD's delight

Understandably, Black Dyke's MD, Dr Nicholas Childs was delighted when he spoke to 4BR.

"Black Dyke have only taken part at Whit Friday a handful of times in the past 20 years, but there is always excitement for us when we compete at the greatest march contest in the world.

Sadly, we didn't have the opportunity to travel over to Tameside, but the atmosphere in Saddleworth was tremendous and the competitiveness was frightening and always entertaining."

Brighouse runners-up

Dyke's success meant they wrestled the Saddleworth crown from arch rivals and National champion, Brighouse & Rastrick, who were led by Ian Porthouse.

The West Riding outfit performed 'Ravenswood' around the circuit with victories at Greenfield and Grotton, plus a quartet of runner-up spots at Delph, Denshaw, Dobcross, Lees & Springhead.

Further placings at Diggle and Uppermill along with the individual solo prizes meant they cashed in with a total £5,130 in overall prize money.

Dyke took six first prizes and one third at their eight venues as they banked £7,6304BR

Marsden delight

Third place went to Marsden Silver under guest MD Paul Andrews, who competed at all ten Saddleworth venues.

Whilst there were unable to claim a contest victory, their performances of 'Knight Templar' picked up runner-up spots at Scouthead & Austerlands and Uppermill, with a hat-trick of third places at Delph, Greenfield and Grotton.

After their podium finish at the All England Masters International last Sunday, they boosted their coffers with an additional £2,000 for their night's work.

Oldham's joy

The Local Championship saw Oldham Band (Lees) under John Collins take the £750 first prize, with Milnrow led by Alan Wycherley in second and Delph in third. The Youth honours went to 2nd Rossendale Scout Group.

The full results are published thanks to the excellent work of Bill Cullen.
