Black Dyke's tenor horn player, Jonathan Bates will appear on BBC 4 on Friday evening, in the Brass Final of the 2012 BBC Young Musician of the Year.
Five compete
The sixteen year old competed against four other brass instrumentalists at the Dora Stoutzker Hall, in the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff just days after he was part of Black Dyke's Yorkshire Area triumph in March.
Each of the finalist's are of grade 8 standard or above and had gone through two rounds of qualification before reaching the final.

The adjudicator's for the final were Naomi Atherto and David Childs.

Five down to three
Success in the Brass Final would see Jonathan go on to compete in the semi-final that was also pre-recorded in March against the winners of the Keyboard, Percussion, Strings and Woodwind categories with just three of them making it through to the concerto final on Sunday May 13th at The Sage, Gateshead.
The date for transmission of the semi-final is yet to be confirmed but BBC Radio 3 will be airing selective performances from the various category finalists in the coming weeks.
The final will be broadcast on both BBC2 and Radio 3 on the day the winner of the £2,000 first prize and a specially commissioned trophy is announced.

The Brass Final will be aired on BBC Four on Friday evening between 7.30-9pm and there afterwards on the BBCiplayer.
