4BR has been informed that Derick Kane, Principal Euphonium of the International Staff Band, will receive this year’s Masters Dedicated Service Award.
Legend
It will be presented to the euphonium legend at the conclusion of the All England Masters International Championship which takes place at the Lighthouse Theatre, Kettering on Sunday 27th May.
Philip Biggs told 4BR: "Derick is a true legend of the Salvation Army, the euphonium and brass bands. Being the principal euphonium of the International Staff Band for 37 years is a phenomenal achievement and to remain at the top of his game for the whole period is a nothing short of astonishing."
Scottish start
Derick began his euphonium playing as a member of the SA Junior Band in Hamilton, Scotland and was appointed to the ISB in 1976, playing under three bandmasters since that time and also serving as the band’s deputy bandmaster for the past several years.
The British Bandsman awarded him the prestigious 'Euphonium Player of the Year' award in 1991, presented on the occasion of an ISB centenary concert in the Fairfield Halls, Croydon.
