20% increase in Welsh Area

There has been a remarkable 20% increase in entries for this year's Welsh Regional Contest in Swansea.

Brangwyn Hall

The Welsh Regional Council has announced a 20% increase in the number of bands who will take part in the Area contest in Swansea on the weekend of 17th/18th March.

Highest since 2006

48 bands, with 10 in the Fourth Section have entered the event – the highest number since 2006.

Secretary Philip Morris told 4BR that the increase is more good news for Welsh banding. "To see such an increase in numbers is very encouraging," he said.

"There is so much hard work going on in bandrooms throughout the country at present, and with the new Welsh Banding Forum and the recent successes of Welsh bands at the National Finals, there is a real sense of optimism that I hope will be reflected in a great weekend of competition at the Brangwyn Hall."

Welcome return

Philip revealed that the Fourth Section will see at least one brand new band take part this year, whilst there will be a welcome return for at least two bands from North Wales.

"It’s always good to see new bands taking part, but what is even more encouraging is to welcome back those who have been unable to compete in the past few years – including Mid Rhondda, Rhyl and Holywell."
