4BR has been informed that three of the world’s finest ever soprano cornet players may be joining forces in 2012 to release a recording of their greatest hits.
In the pipeline
It is understood that a CD of solos recorded over the years by Alan Wycherley, Kevin Crockford and Peter Roberts could well be in the pipeline, after it was revealed that the trio had been approached recently about the possibility of the project.
Six decades
In careers spanning six decades the trio have played their part in helping bands claim innumerable major championship titles, as well as picking up nearly as many individual solo awards along the way.
Peter Roberts recently announced that he was returning to banding with Kippax in Yorkshire, whilst Alan Wycherley still performs with various bands around the world. The youngest of the three, Kevin Crockford currently plays with Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
It’s amazing that the three have never released a CD together. They are the brass band version of the ‘Three Tenors’ – and just as good4BR source
Three tenors
A source close to the project told 4BR: "It’s amazing that the three have never released a CD together. They are the brass band version of the ‘Three Tenors’ – and just as good."
They added: "They have agreed that the best way to leave a lasting legacy of their careers with some of the finest bands in the world is to produce a recording of their greatest solo performances – played with the likes of Black Dyke, Grimethorpe, Fairey’s, Fodens, Leyland and others."
Tight lipped
Although the player’s themselves were tight lipped about the possibility of the exciting project, the source confirmed that there are only a couple of hurdles to be overcome before it can be released.
"Just about everything is in place," they told 4BR.
"When it comes out it will be a blockbuster. The lads have fans all over the world – and to hear all three of possibly the finest soprano players of the past 40 years on one CD has got to be the bargain of the decade and be a very special item to add to every brass band recording collection."
