Black Dyke principal cornet Richard Marshall has just returned from a highly successful tour to the United States and Canada.
Impression
Such was the impression made that he has already been inundated with requests for an immediate return – if Black Dyke are not too busy!
Tim Jameson, conductor of the Dublin Silver Band, told 4BR after he had performed with the band: "Richard was the consummate professional. He was a pleasure to work with, and is truly a high quality person as well as musician."
Master
The tour commenced in Atlanta, where Richard joined forces with Georgia Brass Band under the leadership of Joe Johnson.
The packed hall at the University of Georgia was blown away by his playing, with one respected critic noting: "Richard is a true master of the cornet who can summon amazing technical prowess and sublime lyricism at will."

Dublin assist
Richard then flew to Ohio to work with Dublin Silver Band and to present two masterclasses to students at Otterbein School as well as the entire 250 strong Ohio State Marching Band.
He was also able to assist with Dublin’s preparations for the US Open contest – something which paid dividends as the band went onto come runner up at the prestigious event.
Anniversary
To conclude the tour, Richard visited Toronto to perform two concerts with the Weston Silver Band, and ensemble he has worked with on numerous occasions, and who are celebrating their 90th anniversary this year.
He again presented two masterclasses — one in Colbourg and one on the final morning of his travels at the University of Toronto, which were attended by many young players of the Hannaford Youth Band and students of the University.
Asked back
Richard told 4BR on his return: "It's always nice to visit old friends and make new ones. My CD’s were a sell out and many thanks must go to Theresa MacDonald, Pat Herak and Joe Johnson, for being excellent tour hosts.
I have already been asked back – and all I have to do is find another space in my diary!"
