Ratby Mid Band recently travelled from the rolling fields of Leicestershire to the Yorkshire Dales for their first appearance at the famous Hardraw Scar Brass Band, held at the back of the Green Dragon pub — and came back with a three trophy haul.
Trophies
Under the guidance of Geoff Newman, the band came runner up in their section as well as winning the trophy for ‘Best March’ and ‘Most Entertaining Band’.
For some of the teenage members of the band this was their first ever contest – and for the whole of the band, this was their first experience of the famous event.

Overnight stay
The band travelled up on the Saturday, stayed in the picturesque village of Kettlewell overnight and attended the contest on the Sunday, playing at the contest and the Mass Band Concert before travelling back to Ratby on Sunday evening.
Principal euphonium player Fran Skinner told 4BR: "It was an enjoyable experience in ‘Xtreme brass banding!"
Champers
The prizes were celebrated at the regular practise on the Monday rehearsal with champagne and cakes provided by Ewan Eaton and Sally-Anne Sephton (the band’s two BBb bass players)
