Advert: Kirklees triple celebrations

Kirklees Music, the Brighouse based printing and publishing firm complete an unprecedented 30 years in business.

Kirklees

David Horsfield, founded the publishing and printing company while he was production director at Kirklees Printing Company, a part of the Provident Financial Group, in 1981.

Grown

Since those early days the catalogue has grown to a comprehensive list of over 800 titles including music for brass band, wind band, brass ensembles and solo brass.

Music for the education sector includes titles for brass, woodwind, pianoforte, and percussion and many are listed in the Associated Board, Trinity and Guildhall syllabuses.

Driving force

David’s son Graham is the driving force nowadays and he works closely with the illustrious composers and arrangers Kirklees have on their books.

Top composers

The music of Philip Wilby, not only his famous band titles but also his choral and organ music, enhance the collection of quality music and place Kirklees at the top end of British music publishers.

John Pickard, Michael Ball, Bram Wiggins, Roy Newsome, Goff Richards, Bill Charleson, Darrol Barry, Derek Broadbent, Alan Fernie, Alan Morrison and Leigh Baker are just some of the names found in the new catalogue now available which includes many works by John Golland and Wilfred Heaton.

20 years of Brass Review

Celebrating twenty years is their unique Free Press 'Brass Review', which keeps up the family connection with Dennis Wilby, who has been editor since the first edition in 1991.

The innovative ideas this magazine came up with have been copied by other banding publications since those early days. Also a partnership of over twenty years has seen the publication of Howard Snell’s music under the Rakeway Music banner.

Ten years with Salford University

Ten years ago Kirklees worked with David King, Mick Wilson, Roy Newsome and Peter Graham to establish the now successful partnership with Salford University in the annual Composition Award and this has given the young students the chance to get their music recognised and into print.

Test pieces

Test pieces have been selected from the students including Dan Price and Ludovic Neurohr. Other young composers who have found their way into the catalogue include Andrew Myers, Gareth Churcher, Franner Otter, Gareth Westwood, Simon Dobson, Andrea Price and recently Jonathan Bates.
