Domestic challenge for inaugural Miners contest

12 Welsh bands to line up for the first South Wales Miners Welfare Entertainment Contest — with a great trophy on offer to take home.

Porthcawl

The inaugural South Miners Welfare Entertainment Contest will take place at the Pavilion Theatre in Porthcawl on September 17th.

Entertainment

The contest will see bands graded nationally in Sections 2, 3 & 4 and from a Coal Mining Community, each playing a 20-minute own choice concert programme.

For the first year the competing bands all come from Welsh coal mining communities, although from next year, with the sponsors blessing, the contest will be open to bands from coal mining communities across the UK.

Magnificent trophy

The winning band will receive the magnificent South Wales Miners Eisteddfod Challenge Cup, valued at over £6,000, which was originally the Eisteddfod’s premier male voice award, but has been rededicated to the South Wales Miners Entertainment Contest.

Ammanford, Blaenavon Town, Briton Ferry, Crosskeys, Gwaun Cae Gurwen, Lewis Merthyr, Oakdale, Ogmore Valley, RAF St. Athan Voluntary, Treherbert, Ynyshir and Ystradgynlais make up the domestic challengers for the contest, which will be covered live by 4BR.

The winning band will receive the magnificent South Wales Miners Eisteddfod Challenge Cup, valued at over £6,0004BR

Winning invite

The contest will be split into two halves with a comfort break at the halfway point. The contest starts at midday and the adjudicators will be Melvin White

At the request of the sponsors, the Miners Welfare Trust, the winning band will be invited to compete at the 2012 Welsh Open Entertainment Contest in February.
