16 year old Illiam Quane has won the 2011 Young Musician of Mann title, which took place at the Erin Arts Centre, Isle of Man on Sunday 26th June.
Stunning performances
The competition is open to any instrumentalist under the age of 19 and all finalists had to pass a preliminary round to reach the final.
Illiam gave a stunning performances of Goedicke’s ‘Concert Etude’, Mozart’s ‘Alleluia’, ‘My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose’ and Kenny Baker’s ‘Virtuosity’.
Illiam attends Ramsey Grammar School, plays solo cornet for Ramsey Town Band and is a member of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain.

Awards
He received the Malcolm Dickinson Memorial Prize of £200, a silver cup presented by the Rotary Club of Rushen & Western Mann, a glass goblet presented by the Isle of Man Arts Council and a special plaque in memory of Marian Shimmin.
Prizes
Runner-up on the day was percussionist Peter Mitchell and tenor horn player Ellen Quane (Illiam’s younger sister) was third. The other finalists were Sam Walker (clarinet) and Theo Leach (tuba).
The panel of adjudicators included Professor Linda Merrick, Vice Principal of the Royal Northern College of Music.
Footsteps
Illiam has followed in the footsteps of his sister Meghan, who won the last competition in 2009.
