The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff recently hosted the second prestigious Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition.
Brass quintet
Open to all music students at the RWCMD, it asked competitors to write a work of between five to seven minutes in duration for brass quintet.
Seven compositions were shortlisted for a recital finale in which their respective composers introduced them before being performed by students from the College.

Lindberg
Adjudication was made by Stainer & Bell's Antony Kearns and Nicholas Williams, together with renowned trombonist, composer and conductor (and RWCMD International Chair of Trombone), Christian Lindberg.
First prize
The first prize of £250 and publication of the winning work went to composition student Timothy Wilson for ‘Avidity’, which was performed by Tiger Bay Brass.
This exciting new work will be featured in a concert at the RWCMD given by the Fine Art Brass Ensemble on 1st July.
