Following the recent announcement of Jason Katsikaris returning to Leyland to take the band at the British Open, 4BR can exclusively reveal that they welcome back another returnee with the appointment of Richard Evans as their new Professional Conductor.
New chapter
It marks the start of yet another remarkable chapter in the musical life for the man who was instrumental in putting in place the foundations of a rejuvenated band 35 years ago, leading to numerous contests successes, including a historic British Open victory in 1994.
Contests
He will take Leyland to the forthcoming English Nationals, Whit Friday and Brass in Concert Championships.
It was explained to 4BR that following a recent CD project due for release later this year, the band wasted no time in inviting Richard to extend his current role as Musical Director Emeritus as well as taking them on the contest stage once more.
Drive and determination
"Richard and Leyland go back over thirty years," commented Iain Mcknight, Band Administrator. "He has the same drive and determination that he had when the band were ranked number one in the world.
His enthusiasm and positivity is infectious and audiences simply love him. We are all very excited about working with him on various projects, contests and concerts."
Legend
John Doyle, Associate Musical Director also told 4BR: "Mr Evans is simply a legend. His musicality and ability to get the utmost from players is second to none.
He is respected around the world as an outstanding musician, and I for one am very excited about working closely with him to shape the future of this great band. We hope to see a plethora of trophies in the cabinet very soon.”

Evans enthused
Richard Evans is equally enthused by the return, which will see him direct the band on the contest stage for the first time in over a decade.
"Leyland Band runs in my blood, so to be able to return has given me a huge infusion of energy and excitement," he said as 4BR caught up with him in the Isle of Man. "There is such talent here that it was an opportunity not to miss. I think it could be a very exciting musical period for us both."
New signings
Meanwhile the band has welcomed a number of signings to their ranks.
Ian Hodgson joins on Bb bass after the departure of Alan Hodgkinson to Fodens, Dave Mcloud comes in on 2nd trombone after a successful time at Blackburn & Darwen Band, whilst Andy Power takes the repiano after playing assistant principal at Wire Brass and Michelle Lane joins on solo cornet following successful spells with Wingates, Ashton and Hepworth.
