British Open champions Tredegar is set to be part of a rare full performance of the brass band version of Holst’s ‘The Planets’ this week, when they join forces with the student band of Birmingham Conservatoire at the Sir Adrian Boult Hall in the city.
Musical relationship
Friday evening’s event is part of a developing musical relationship that is being built by the Conservatoire with the Open champions, which both parties hope will flourish over the coming years.

Rare
Ian Porthouse told 4BR: "It’s rare to be able to perform the full suite in this manner – especially joined by harpists, celeste, ladies chorus, narration and projected images.
The Conservatoire has been working to develop high profile musical events which will feature brass bands and brass band music, so we hope this will be the first of many at such a prestigious venue."
Atmospheric
He added: "Stephen Roberts’ score is wonderfully atmospheric, whilst there is real added colour and texture when its is combined with the chorus, harps and celeste. It’s a superb realisation."
