Popular banding venue in danger

One of the most popular brass band concert venues in the North West is under threat of closure.

One of the most popular brass band concert venues in the North West of England is under threat of closure.

Musical history

The Formby Hall, which has played a major part of the Atherton area’s musical history, with numerous bands performing there over the years, is under threat, following news that it could be sold to property developers.

Losing subsidy

According to local councillor Norman Bradbury, the hall, which was given to the community by the local Burrows family, is facing an uncertain future as its local authority subsidy could well be taken away.

Fearful

Cllr Bradbury is hopeful that an all inclusive community group may be encouraged to take over the running of the facility, but is fearful that if the necessary support is not forthcoming the civic amenity could well be sold to the highest bidder and site developed for housing.

The deadline for the proposals concerning the Formby Hll are to be submitted to the local council on February 18th.
