The confusion over the reported withdrawal of Howard Snell as an adjudicator at the forthcoming Scottish Open Championships has been resolved over the weekend.
4BR understands that following extensive enquiries by the Scottish Brass Band Association, he will in fact take his place as one of the trio of judges at the event.
Report
A report in Brass Band World magazine stated that the former Foden’s Musical Director had written to Peter Fraser, the Scottish Brass Band Association Event Manager, telling him that he had become aware that his professional integrity had been the subject of what he referred to as, '…negative discussion in some quarters of Scottish banding'.
Impossible position
He also described the alleged discussions as, '…inaccurate in its assumptions, outrageous in its suggestions and undoubtedly actionable', and further added that it also placed the Co-operative Funeralcare Band and its conductor Michael Fowles, in 'an impossible position'.
Such were his feeling concerning the matter – which he described as, 'smearing filth across the face of contesting', that he decided to withdraw from the event.
Extensive enquiries
The Scottish Brass Band Association fully supported his decision, but following extensive enquiries, it was established that no allegations had in fact been made. After further discussions with Howard Snell, it has been reported that he has decided to remain as an adjudicator at the contest.
Statement
In issuing a new statement, the Scottish Brass Band Association, hopes that the situation has now been resolved.
"Howard Snell had been made aware, through a third party, that allegations impugning his professional integrity and impartiality were thought to be circulating. He was, with regret, supported in his decision to withdraw by the competition organisers, the Scottish Brass Band Association (SBBA).
Following extensive enquiries by SBBA, it has been established beyond doubt that no allegations or rumours of allegations have been made. SBBA is delighted therefore that Howard Snell has decided to remain on the adjudicating panel of the Scottish ‘Open’ and offers the following statement:
SBBA wishes to apologise to all concerned for any embarrassment that this genuine misunderstanding may have causedSBBA
New statement
"The Scottish Brass Band Association joins with Howard Snell and Brass Band World magazine in deploring any form of 'ignorant, small-minded and negative discussion' that seeks to call into question the integrity of any aspect of the movement which we all love.
It is with a sense of relief that SBBA can make the assurance that no allegations have been made in respect of Howard Snell’s impartiality or integrity.
Mr Snell is one of the most respected brass band conductors and teachers of our time. He was invited to judge at the Scottish ‘Open’ because of his many decades of experience directing brass bands at the highest level and his unquestioned professionalism.
SBBA wishes to apologise to all concerned for any embarrassment that this genuine misunderstanding may have caused."
