The Scottish Youth Championships, which will take place later next month in Perth will resound to the sound of over 1000 young brass musicians, thanks to an unprecedented record entry of 34 bands.
Six fold
Since its revival in 2005, this event has been a huge success for the Scottish Brass Band Association – with a six-fold increase in entrants in just six years.
This event is the centrepiece of the Scottish Brass Band Association’s Youth Development Programme, and reflects the work of the Association and its Youth Development Officer, Alan Edmond, in energising the local banding communities throughout the country.

Minister
And such has been in impact, that for the first time a Scottish MSP Minister, Fiona Hyslop, Minister for Culture and External Affairs, will be in attendance at the contest to present the prizes in the Senior and Premier sections.
Comprising four sections, the event will also see one of the largest ever youth bands to take to the stage too, with the 80-strong Perth & Kinross Junior Schools Band, one of no fewer than 20 ‘learner’ bands competing in the Novice Class.
Talents
With six bands in the Development Section and five in the Senior Class the weekend will be rounded off with the talents of the three most experienced bands in the Premier Section – Aberdeen, Carnoustie & District and West Lothian Schools.
The Scottish Youth Championships forms the second day of the Scottish Brass Band Festival, which sees the Scottish Open and Challenge Shield contest on the Saturday and Gala Concert featuring the newly crowned National Champions, Brighouse & Rastrick in the evening.
