Norwegians to get dose of the Clap

A wonderful assortment of premieres and performances to be heard in Bergen this weekend – including one intriguing piece by composer Paul McGhee…

The seventh BrassWind Festival takes place in Bergen this weekend

Euphonium Concerto

Euphonium star David Thornton will give the Norwegian premiere of Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen, ‘Euphonium Concerto’ which received critical acclaim on its world premiere performed by David and Black Dyke Band last January during RNCM Festival of Brass

Norwegian Champions, Manger Musikklag and guest conductor Peter Szilvay will provide the accompaniment on this occasion whilst the female voices of the St. Sunniva Chamber Choir will take provide the atmospheric accompaniment in the austere second movement.

Manger will also give a rare performance of ‘Refrains and Cadenzas’ by Thomas Wilson, which it is believed has never been played in Norway, whilst there will be an intriguing world premiere of Paul McGhee’s new work, entitled 'Clap!!!!'.

Manger’s principal cornet player Erlend Aagaard-Nilsen will provide a recital at the Grieghallen on Saturday afternoon when he will perform two brand new pieces for trumpet and piano by composer’s Tosse and Hvoslef.

Trombone works

Other well known personalities taking part will include conductor Bjorn Sagstad teaming up with the Manger Folk High School Brass Band and Bergen New Trombone Quartet, whilst Grethe Tonheim of Eikanger and Camilla Tveit of Manger present trombone pieces.
