There was some success for a foreign manager in competition on the weekend as Frank Renton led Whitburn to the 2010 West Lothian Entertainment title.
Fourth title
With all eyes south of Hadrian’s Wall glued to the television to watch England’s sorry departure from the World Cup in South Africa, there was at least some delight to be found for an English manager in Scotland of all places, as Frank Renton led Whitburn to their fourth West Lothian Entertainment contest title.
Well constructed
Up against Kingdom Brass, Whitburn’s greater experience counted a great deal as they produced a well constructed programme to take the title and £1,400 prize money by a two point winning margin.
Spirited
That experience was needed however as a spirited Kingdom produced a highly entertaining programme under the baton of Andrew Duncan, that saw them push the eventual winners all the way, and made the job of adjudicator's Alan Morrison and Alan Fernie much harder than many people may have thought before a note was blown at the Livingston Centre.
Star trombone
Whitburn’s win also saw star trombonist Alex Philip take the 'Best Soloist' prize, as well as the prize for 'Best new Composition or Arrangement'.
The 'Best Section' prize was won by Kingdom Brass, with their version of 'Minstral Boy', whilst Kirkintilloch’s fine performance of 'An American Tale' in the semi final saw them pick up the 'Audience Prize'.
Neat
Kingdom opened up the final with a programme that included three Andy Duncan compositions, as well as a neat touch of humour in 'Keystone Cops' and the finisher. 'Procession to the Minster'.
Reprise
Meanwhile, Whitburn opened their account with a reprise of their semi final starter 'Finiculi-Finicula Rhapsody', before following with the flugel solo 'Oblivion' played by Chris Bradley, 'Bach Variations', the flugel feature 'You are the Sunshine of My Life', 'Norwegian Wood', 'Tonight', 'Pure Imagination', 'Huntin' Wabbits', and the finale, 'Shine as the Light'.
