The Brighouse based Co-operative Yorkshire Band has announced that from 5th July, it will be withdrawing from contesting for the immediate future in order to pursue and promote brass music as a chamber concert ensemble.
Out of the brass band box
Commenting on behalf of the band, Tabby Clegg told 4BR: "Without doubt this is a positive move forward. Over its 12 year history, the band has never been shy to step out of the ‘brass band box’ and make decisions which are best for itself rather than conforming to the ideals of others.
The decision to withdraw from the contesting scene is just another of these decisions."

Commitment
Tabby Clegg also highlighted the reasons behind the decision: "We have many players who enjoy the work we undertake but due to other commitments do not want to commit to a contesting band. In order for the band to fulfil its desire to perform we have decided to relinquish the commitment to contesting for the time being."
Reality
Tabby confirmed that the ensemble currently has an exciting diary of concerts and projects, combined with a new developing training band.
"The reality today is that bands struggle to keep conforming to the traditional ideal of 25 players and three percussionists. Our belief is that the brass band genre can be promoted with greater enjoyment for both audiences and musicians working in a more fun, relaxed and musically focussed environment."
Yorkshire Co-op will make its last contesting appearance in its home town at the Brighouse March Contest on Sunday 4th July.
