New MD for Whitwell

Lynden Cooper has been appointed the new man at the helm for Whitwell Brass.

Whitwell

Whitwell Brass has announced the appointment of Lynden Cooper as their new Musical Director.

Five generations

Lynden is a well-known local musician from a family with a 160 year connection to brass bands and his appointment marks the fifth generation of the same family to be a Musical Director.

The former Junior Slow Melody Champion of Great Britain has played for numerous top level bands during his career and is currently principal euphonium of Newstead Brass and the Masson Mills Band.

They are a great bunch of people with a strong commitment to encouraging young players, a good organisational structure, enthusiasm and talent. I am really looking forward to a successful long-term partnershipLynden Cooper

Strong commitment

Lynden told 4BR: "I'm really pleased to become the new MD. They are a great bunch of people with a strong commitment to encouraging young players, a good organisational structure, enthusiasm and talent. I am really looking forward to a successful long-term partnership."

Replacement

Lynden replaces David Fretwell who led the band over the previous five years.

David told 4BR: "The last five years have been most enjoyable and very productive — the highlight undoubtedly being the win at the Area contest in 2009. I would like to thank everyone involved with the band for their support. I would also like to wish the band and Lynden good luck and best wishes for the future."

In addition to their new MD, the band also welcomes to the ranks Jane and Trevor Milner on solo cornet and soprano.
