The third annual Hebden Bridge March & Hymn Tune contest was held on Sunday 20th June, when 13 bands competed in front of hundreds of spectators for a prize pot in excess of £1,200.
Clean sweep
Marsden Silver Prize Band maintained their recent form taking a clean sweep of the prizes for ‘Best Contest March’, ‘Best Hymn Tune’ and ‘Best Road March’, picking up £300 in prize money.
Improvements
Hebden Bridge Band Chairman, Steve Gardner, informed 4BR that this year’s event had improved in all areas following feedback from the bands who had previously taken part, and that he would be pleased to receive suggestions for further improvements to be incorporated next year.
He also thanked all the sponsors, without whose help and support the event would not have taken place, and also the bands for taking part.

Thanks
Event Sponsor Simon Moyle of Moyle’s Hotel and Restaurant praised the bands for taking part and also the organising team at Hebden Bridge Band, but took the time to remind the spectators and indeed the sponsors of the need to maintain support to ensure the continued success of the contest.
Concert
The weekend also included a Patron’s Concert provided by the Hebden Bridge band under the direction of Roy Curran who produced a varied programme of music, ranging from ‘One Voice’ to ‘Le Roi d’Ys’, whilst the featured guest soloist was Black Dyke tuba star Joseph Cook.
Invited guest included Karyn and Martin Mortimer, who enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining evening provided by the band that is so inextricably linked to the Mortimer family.
