The Royal Northern College of Music is hosting its Brass Focus Day this Saturday.
Aim
The day is aimed at players of Grade 5 standard upwards and gives participants the opportunity to play in workshops and masterclasses featuring every single brass band instrument.
Tutors, including John Miller, Leslie Neish, Richard Marshall and David Thornton will lead the classes and be on hand to offer advice.
Participants will also be able to hear concert performances from the Black Dyke, Smithills School Senior Brass Band and RNCM Brass Bands.
Highlights:
Workshop One:
Grade 8+ standard

John Miller, Director of Brass Studies at the RNCM, will lead a warm-up and coaching session on music including Malcolm Arnold’s 'Little Suite for Brass'.
Workshop Two:
10.30am
Join Les Neish, the tuba teacher at Junior RNCM, for a group warm-up and coaching session.
Black Dyke and Smithills School Senior Band:

Pieces to be performed include 'Africa', 'Festmusik Der Stadt Wien', 'Red Priest', 'Klezmorim', 'Kings of Cool', 'Cry Me a River', 'I’m Still Standing'.
Workshop Three:

Principal Cornet of Black Dyke Band and RNCM tutor, Richard Marshall leads this workshop that will include opportunities for students to play and the chance for everyone to ask questions of this virtuoso player.
Workshop Four:

David Thornton, solo euphonium of Black Dyke Band and RNCM tutor, leads this workshop on all aspects of brass band playing for euphonium and tenor horn players.
Workshop Five:
2.00pm
Les Neish leads this workshop for tuba and trombone that will include opportunities for all students to play and a chance for everyone to ask questions of this renowned player.
RNCM Brass Band:
4.00pm
The RNCM Brass Band performs an exciting programme of popular brass band repertoire. Focus Day participants will be able to join forces with the band for the final two items in the programme.
