Philip Cobb is the latest in a string of distinguished musicians who started their careers in a brass band before filling high profile positions in orchestras around the world.
Philip was just 21 when he was appointed co- principal trumpet of the LSO but will never forgot his early days in Salvation Army bands.
Two others players are Ian Bousefield who played with The Black Dyke Band before becoming Principal Trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Martin Winter, who started out at Desford Colliery as both miner and musican but who is now co-principal trumpet of the Bergen Symphony Orchestra and a regular with the Eikhanger Bjorsvek Band.
Frank Renton presents solo recordings by these and other brilliant players showing just why they have become such celebrated musicians
