This weekend, euphonium virtuoso Steven Mead, fresh from his appearance at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference in Arizona, will perform Rolf Rudin's 'Hallows Concerto' with the New Philharmonic Orchestra Frankfurt.
Gigantic
Steven told 4BR: "It's one of my absolute favourite concertos and it's a great thrill to play it with such wonderful musicians and in such a magnificent venue."
He added: "This is the second time that I will have performed the concerto with this particular orchestra and I'm confident we will have a great time. It is a truely 'gigantic' piece — over 31 minutes long and using a very large orchestra, plus harp and piano. Because of this, the last time I played it was in Seoul last year."
New Pallhuber work
Steven will be meeting up with the composer once again to put the final touches to the performance, whilst he also revealed that Austrian composer Hermann Pallhuber is currently writing a brand new Euphonium Concerto for him, which he hopes to premiere in Innsbruck next year.
