During a recent Brighouse & Rastrick concert, one of the band's stalwart players and committeemen, Sheridan Fryer, was awarded the Huddersfield Brass Band Association '50 Years Service to Banding' Medal.
Alan Kaye, President of the Huddersfield Brass Band Association presented Sheridan Fryer with the award.
Cornet first
Sheridan Fryer first started playing the trumpet at age 11 before he was persuaded to take up the cornet.
After 4 years with Lockwood Band, Sheridan was asked to join Linthwaite and spent the next 7 years playing baritone and then solo euphonium.
In 1969 Sheridan joined Brighouse on 2nd baritone and after a short spell on euphonium spent the next nine years on solo baritone.
Sheridan has spent more than 50 years in banding, over 30 of which have been with Brighouse4BR
Triumphs
He was apart of the band that won the National Championships in 1969 and 1973, Granada Band of the Year 1975, and the British Open in 1978, as well as playing his part in the success of the 'Floral Dance'.
After a break form banding he returned to Brighouse in 1989 and was an integral part of the band during the 'purple patch' of success under Allan Withington's command, with wins at the National, Masters and European Championships.
30 with Brighouse
Sheridan has spent more than 50 years in banding, over 30 of which have been with Brighouse.
He has now retired from playing but has taken on the role of music librarian and his wife Mary, is also involved with the Brighouse Supporters Group.
