Cardiff University Concert Hall is gearing up to host a landmark event for Welsh brass banding on the 23rd April.

The 'Cardiff New Brass Festival' will pull together performers, composers and renowned figures from the British brass scene into a one night event focusing specifically on new and undiscovered music for the genre.

Top Brass

As reported previously on 4BR, the event is the brainchild of Welsh composer and conductor Tom Davoren.

He has been able to get together with events manager Alice Jones, presenter Nigel Seaman, BTM Band, Wormshead Brass Ensemble and Cardiff University School of Music to create an alliance that crosses the boundaries of orchestral, brass band and academic music making.

Tom Davoren told 4BR: "There is such a depth of performing talent in the Welsh brass movement today. Combine this with our principality's rich compositional heritage and the number of rising composers in British banding today a festival of this nature in our nations capital seems long overdue. With composers in attendance, renowned musicians on stage and the insight of presenter Nigel Seaman, its certainly not your average brass band concert!"

...the event boasts world premiere performances from two of the most exciting composers affiliated with the band movement today, Peter Meechan and Lucy Pankhurst4BR

World Premieres

In addition to a host of ensembles and world class soloists, the event boasts world premiere performances from two of the most exciting composers affiliated with the band movement today, Peter Meechan and Lucy Pankhurst.

Feature composers will also include the trend setting voice of Simon Dobson and Edward Gregson.

Welsh resurrections

Wormshead Brass Ensemble will present a programme of contemporary Welsh music whilst the BTM Band showcase important work from Welsh art composer Gareth Glyn.
