Jackfield Elcock Reisen had a weekend of downs and ups at this year's Butlins Championships. The day before their appearance in the First Section they heard of the death of their President Ken Evans
Remarkable
Ken started his remarkable playing career with the Jackfield Band in 1930 at the age of 14 as a euphonium player and served the band for nearly 80 years, only unbroken by national service in World War Two.
Ken who lived in Jackfield and Broseley in Shropshire started his working career on the railways based at Ironbridge Station and also regularly delivered goods to the local community by lorry. He later went on to work at the Coalbrookdale Works near Ironbridge.
Saddened and thrilled
Band Chairman, Paul France told 4BR: "We were all saddened when we heard the news and decided to dedicate our performance at Butlins to him. He would have been absolutely thrilled at our first place and would have loved the sight of his band being the 2010 Butlins First Section Champions. He was a dedicated player, committee member and president’
Funeral
His funeral is Saturday 30th January at St Marys Church in Jackfield starting at 12.30. The band will be there to pay their respects and lead the hymns.
