The members of Northumbrian Water Ellington Band were recently saddened by the death of stalwart Jack Johnson, but proud to be asked to play at his funeral in August.
Jack retired from the band eighteen months ago due to ill health.
Common sense
He had been a member of the band for over forty years, joining from Hauxley Band when he was 27 years old.
Jack served on the band committee for many years where his common sense and down to earth approach were invaluable.
He was a gentleman and a bandsman and will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing himJohn Colvine
Respected
In the latter years he was also in charge of organising deputies for engagements; building up an extensive network of contacts.
He was so widely respected that many of the people he asked to play would put themselves out to do so just because it was Jack who had asked them.
Dedicated
John Colvine told 4BR: "His dedication and loyalty to the band were second to none. He was a gentleman and a bandsman and will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him."
