19 bands in 2008, 22 in 2009, 24 in 2010 and 23 this year – there is now a solid foundation base to Norwegian banding – and one that sprouts any number of very competent as well as ambitious bands.
Vivid selection boxes
That is shown by the vivid selection box of musical goodies that will be served up in the Peer Gynt Hall starting at 9.00am on Saturday for adjudicators Cathrine Winnes Trevino and Karl Ole Midtbo.
As has now become something of a tradition there will be plenty of laughter and smiles, lots of great playing, some over ambitious own choices (and a few completely bonkers) and a wonderfully friendly competitive atmosphere.
Real surprise
With the top four bands from last year gaining promotion to the Third Division and three coming down in the opposite direction there should be a much more evenly matched contest in prospect than has sometimes been the case – although it still has the uncanny ability to throw up a real surprise or two – such as Bjorsvik Brass a coupe of years back.
There is something to cater for just about anyone’s musical tastes on display – from Leighton Lucas to Paul Lovatt-Cooper, George Lloyd to Alan Fernie – and plenty of Philip Sparke.
Picking a winner?
Hard to pick out a clear cut bookies favourite, but Bergen Brass Band who came runner up in the Second Division at SIDDIS, could be the band to beat – on paper.
Rosendal and Randeberg came 4th and 5th respectively in the Third Division at SIDDIS, whilst Lismarka, Gjovik Bybrass, Fjordbrass and Langhus could be ensembles to watch out for after posting impressive performance here 12 months ago.
After that it’s anyone’s guess – so go along and just lap it all up.
It promises to be a belter!
