2010 West of England Regional Championship - Third Section: Runners & Riders

5-Mar-2010

A big field of 15 bands and a big old test of musical character on Labour & Love to overcome if they are to get to Harrogate.

TorquaySaturday 13th March
Adjudicators: David Horsfield & Peter Bassano
The Arena
Test Piece: Labour & Love (Percy Fletcher)
Commences: 10.00am

Whoever gets the nod from David Horsfield and Peter Bassano in the Third Section will have a proud record to maintain when they get to Harrogate – and a hard act to follow if they are to emulate Brunel Brass who took the national title in thrilling fashion last September.

Confident

Given the record of the qualifiers though, they should be confident of more than holding their own. In 11 of the past 12 years at least one band has finished in the top six, with podium finishers in the last two years too.

So which one of these well matched 15 bands will make it through on what is a difficult old work? Three bands come up from the Fourth Section, and one drops down from the Second, whilst five last had a run out at the SWBBA Torquay contest last November and one enjoyed an early season outing at Butlins.

Bath Spa
came runner up here in 2008, but fell away last year to end up in 8th place under the direction of David Hayward. They will be keen to return to qualifying ways then.

Bream Silver and Huw Cole returned last year after a five year stay in the Fourth Section and posted a solid 11th place. They will know they will have to improve on that if they are not to be drawn into a potential relegation scare.

Improving

The rapidly improving Bugle claimed a long overdue qualification place last year, coming runner up and going on to post a solid 8th place at Harrogate. David Pope will be looking for more of the same once again, and they should be one of the favourites at the bookies.

Corsham
meanwhile will be looking for a real boost to their confidence after they dropped away for the second successive year to finish 12th. They were 3rd back in 2007, so they will want to find some of that form again if they are not to be battling against relegation.

The consistent Denmead has been in and around the top six for the past five years and MD Estelle Flood will be looking to make a final push towards a possible qualification place, whilst Pillowell Silver just dropped off the pace last year, but under Steve Ruck has been making decent progress of late, including a highly encouraging 4th place at the SWBBA contest.

Encouraging

Another band with an encouraging result from that contest to build on is Sidmouth Town who won last November and will be looking to continue on their recent improving form here n the last two years under Adrian Harvey.

South Molton meanwhile will be looking for a confidence boost as they drop back to this level after a three-year stint in the Second Section.

No problems with confidence for St Breward though and the National Fourth Section Champions will be bubbling as they look to make it two wins in a row. The band was excellent value for their Harrogate victory and if they can repeat that sort of form this weekend then a quick return north could well be on the cards.

James Burns and St Stythians have been improving under the baton of James Burns, and came an encouraging 5th at the SWBBA contest, whilst Tewkesbury Town will be looking to make an impact after pushing their way to promotion after five years in the Fourth Section.

They were a little unlucky not to have come higher than 11th at Butlins at the beginning of the year, so could be a bit of a dark horse this weekend.

Few scalps

Torbay Brass will want to take a few scalps as they look to maintain their Third Section status after returning last year, whilst Weston Brass has been showing good form of late. They came 6th last year and ended the season with two encouraging results in the Fourth and Second Sections at the SWBBA contest.

Weymouth
make their debut at this level this year after gaining promotion from the Fourth Section under Adman Glynn, whilst Wincanton will be looking to build on their 4th place in the Fourth Section at the SWBBA contest if they are to banish any doubts about a possible relegation battle.

As for a winner?

With such a well matched field it could be a difficult one to predict, but the likes of Sidmouth, Bugle and St Breward could well battle it out for the qualification places, with St Stythians, Pillowell and Bream making up the top six. Our dark horse is Tewkesbury.

4BR Prediction:
1. Bugle Silver
2. St Breward
3. Sidmouth
4. St Stythians
5. Pillowell
6. Bream Silver
