The test piece was specially composed for the contest.
The Iles Medal was presented to T.J. Powell.
The contest was split into two rounds. After all the bands performed, the top six in merit played a second time before the final placings were announced. In the second round Fodens played first, followed by Black Dyke Mills, Besses o' th' Barn, Morris Motors, Carlton Main Frickley Colliery and Creswell Colliey.
