NB*: In 1980 Wales was in dispute with the organisers of the National Championships over the way in which the title of Champion Band of Wales and European representative was chosen.
This contest was held in Treorchy in its place, but was not officially regarded as the Welsh Area Championship.
No bands were officially invited to attend the National Finals, although Cory Band did accept a later invitation.
The Welsh Regional list of winners or Trophy does not include an entry for 1980 — instead it is marked 'No Contest'.
