Weril Brass Instruments: Flugel and Cornet

Peter Uppman gives a glowing report on his Weril Flugelhorn and Cornet and compares them favourably with other leading brands.

Peter Uppman is hailed by the media and his peers as one of the finest multi-talented performers around. This numerous award winning entertainer has featured many times on national television, radio and countless media publications. Currently with 16 albums released and performances with many of the worlds top groups and artists, he is a very sought after regular feature in most of Australia's, and several international Jazz festivals and high profile events.

Peter plays and endorses Weril instruments and has written the following review on the Weril Gold Plated Flugelhorn (EF9071 - Gold plated) and Weril Cornet (EC9071 - Silver plated).

As a professional performer of 27 or so years, I have played, owned and loved many types and brands of horns - including Calicchio, Callet, Taylor, Wild Thing, Bach, Yamaha, Selmer, Couesnon, Jupiter, Shilke, and of course Weril (and there have been other brands not really worth mentioning.)

We all look for different things in our instruments, but for me the most important factors are these: intonation, valve response and ease of playing or playability. Some would consider tonality or tone colour to be crucial also - ie, how the horn sounds. For me, I learnt long ago that any horn will sound just as your soul dictates it to sound. All horns speak differently at first, then the YOU within takes over, and no matter what brand of instrument you have, you will ultimately produce the sound that your head/heart/soul hears.

As an endorsee of Weril instruments, one might expect me to say fantastic things about their horns, and how much better they are to everything else. The truth for me is, these instruments are of superb quality and perform just as I require of any instrument, regardless of the brand. I wouldn't be playing them otherwise! Weril produces instruments that are at the very least, as good as the best horns I've played or owned and in many ways, perform better for me. And, they don't nearly cost as much in most cases!

Weril Gold Plated Flugelhorn (EF9071 - Gold plated)

Take for instance, the Weril Gold Plated Flugelhorn (EF9071 - Gold plated). I prefer it way better than my Yamaha 6310Z Bobby Shew model and some might cringe here, but I also prefer it to the Couesnon Monopole Star that I've loved for many years. I'm sure I don't need to tell you, but for the two people who might not have heard of the Couesnon, it's the model you'd kill your Mother-in-law for... wait, that may not be saying much - better make that your Grandmother. The Weril performs so much better due to the following: playability, slotting, intonation, mechanics (valve response, slides etc.). It looks great too (you wouldn't believe the comments...all very complimentary but some can't be printed here!) A similar story can be told with my Weril Cornet (EC9071 - Silver plated). Both horns are of exceptional quality in every department, including the case they come in.

I know of many who won't even consider trying/buying a horn that's made in Brazil, or Taiwan, ...or perhaps anything that's not got Bach stamped on it, and whilst I agree that no horn brand is going to suit everyone, Weril makes great instruments that are for me, truly a pleasure to play.
