The Mississauga Temple Band were pleased to welcome back Brett Baker as the guest soloist for their spring ‘Musical Extravaganza 2010’, along with the Oakville Children’s Choir at the Salvation Army Temple in Mississauga near Toronto, Canada.
Fifth visit
This was Brett’s fifth visit to Mississauga, over a period of 15 years, and this year’s visit was as eagerly anticipated, as was his first visit back in 1996.
Brett’s contributions included ‘Concert Etude’, ‘Concert’ Piece for Trombone’, ‘Word of Grace' and ‘Now’, a solo based on the tune Gordon associated with the words ‘My Jesus I Love Thee’, written especially for Brett when he recorded a CD with the band in 2003.
Technique
Brett wowed the band with is flawless technique and superb high register and people were asking in the internal when Brett maybe coming back.
The choir performed pieces in a variety of styles, which ranged from, ‘Ave Maria’, ‘Canadian Folk Songs’ and ‘Steppin Out with My Baby’.
Capacity audience
Mississauga Band conducted by their new bandmaster Derrick Fishwick opened up the concert with ‘Ransomed Army’ and concluded with ‘To the Chief Musician’, followed by ‘Under Two Flags’ recently recorded by Black Dyke Band and conducted by Brett to finish off a fabulous concert to a capacity audience.
Brett commented that it has been fantastic meeting up with old friends and making new ones, as well as playing some of my favourite pieces from the Salvation Army repertoire.
After a successful weekend, Brett departed for Columbus, Ohio for his visit to the Band of the Western Reserve in Akron and their conductor Keith Wilkinson and the Central Ohio Brass Band conducted by Jessica Sneeringer.
